Hansen & Quinn Unit 02

Unit 2 introduces the Greek verbal system.  The following topics are presented here:

1. οἱ θεοὶ δῶρα ἔπεμπον εἰς τὴν χώραν.
The gods used to send gifts into the land.

2. πέντε βιβλία τοῖς ξένοις ἐπεμψεν ὁ Ὅμηρος.
Homer sent five books to the strangers.

3. πρὸ τοῦ πολέμου οἱ ἐν τῇ νήσῳ ἄνθρωποι πέμψουσι παρὰ τοὺς φίλους ἓξ ἀγγέλους.
Before the war, the men on the island will send six messengers to (their) friends.

4. ἆρα λύσετε καὶ τὴν τῆς θεοῦ φιλίαν;
Will you destroy even the friendship of the goddess?

5. τοὺς πολέμους ἢ λόγοις ἢ ἔργοις ἐλύομεν.
We used to dissolve the wars either by words or by deeds.

6. τοὺς παρὰ τῷ Ὁμήρῳ φίλους λόγων τέχνην ἐπαίδευσας.
You taught the friends at Homer’s house the art of speeches.

7. τοῖς μὲν ξένοις στεφάνους πέμψομεν, τοῖς δὲ φίλοις βιβλία.
To our guest-friends, we will send crowns, while to our friends, books.

8. οὐκ ἔλυσαν οἱ ξένοι τὸν ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ φίλον;
Did the strangers not release the friend in the house?

9. ἔργῳ, οὐ λόγῳ, τοὺς φίλους ἔλυον.
They used to free (their) friends by deed, not word.

10. πρὸ τῆς μάχης ἐκελεύσατε τοὺς φίλους δῶρα τῷ θεῷ πέμψαι ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας εἰς τὴν νῆσον.
Before the battle, you commanded (your) friends to send gifts to the god out of the house onto the island.

11. οὐ λύσεις, ὦ ξένε, τὸν ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ φίλον;
Stranger, will you not release the friend in the house?

12. τὰ βιβλία τὰ παρὰ τῶν ξένων ἐπαίδευε τοὺς ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀνθρώπους, τοὺς Ὁμήρου φίλους.
The books from the strangers used to educate the men in the marketplace – the friends of Homer.

13. οἱ ἓξ ἀδελφοὶ χρυσοῦ στέφανον ἐκ τῆς χώρας ἔπεμπον παρὰ τὸν Ὅμηρον καὶ τὸν Ὁμήρου ἀδελφόν.
The six brothers were sending a crown of gold out of the land to Homer and the brother of Homer.

14. ὁ μὲν Ὅμηρος τοὺς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ φίλους λόγοις εὖ παιδεύσει, οἱ δὲ ἀδελφοὶ ἔργοις.
While Homer will teach (his) friends in the house well by speeches, the brothers (will teach them) by deeds.

15. τὸν παρὰ τῶν ξένων ἄγγελον ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγορᾶς εἰς τὴν νῆσον ἐπέμψαμεν. ἐκελεύομεν γὰρ τοὺς ἐν τῇ νήσῳ ἀνθρώπους τὸν πόλεμον λῦσαι.
We sent the messenger from the strangers away from the market place to the island. For we were ordering the men on the island to dissolve the war.

16. ὦ ἄδελφε, ζῷα πέμπεις εἰς ἀγορὰν ἢ οὔ;
Brother, are you sending animals to the marketplace or not?

17. καὶ νῦν παιδεύει ὁ Ὅμηρος τὰς ξένων ψυχάς. θεοὶ γὰρ ἐπαίδευον τὸν Ὅμηρον τὴν τέχνην.
Even now Homer educates the souls of strangers. For gods used to teach Homer the art.

18. οἱ θεοὶ τὸν Ὅμηρον κελεύσουσι τοῖς μὲν φίλοις χρυσὸν πέμπειν, τοῖς δὲ ξένοις τοῖς ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ στεφάνους.
The gods will order Homer to send gold to (his) friends on the one hand, crowns to (his) guest-friends in the country, on the other.

19. τὰ τῶν ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ θεῶν ἔργα τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εὖ παιδεύσει.
The deeds of the gods in the country will teach men well.

20. ἆρα εἰς μάχην τοὺς ἀδελφούς πέμψεις;
Will you send (your) brothers into battle?

21. Ὅμηρον ἐκέλευες βιβλία εἰς τὰς νήσους πέμψαι. τοὺς γὰρ ἐν ταῖς νήσοις ἄνθρώπους ἐπαίδευες.
You were ordering Homer to send books to the islands. For you were teaching the men on the islands.

22. οἱ μὲν θεοὶ πόλεμους λύουσιν, οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι τοὺς φίλους εἰς μάχας πέμπουσιν.
While the gods dissolve wars, men send (their) friends into battles.

23. ἡ θεὸς τοὺς ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ ἀνθρώπους κελεύσει χρυσὸν ἢ στέφανον τοῖς φίλοις πέμπειν.
The goddess will order the men in the country to send gold or a crown to their friends.

1.  You used to send gifts from the market place to the gods of the island.

δῶρα ἔπεμπες ἐκ τῆς ἀγορᾶς τοῖς τῆς νήσου θεοῖς.

2.  Did you order Homer to free the five men in the house or not?

ἆρα ἐκελεύσατε τὸν Ὅμηρον λῦσαι τοὺς πέντε ἀνθρώπους τοὺς ἐν τῇ οι̉κίᾳ ἢ οὔ;

3.  They will educate their brothers by words and deeds.

λόγοις καὶ ἔργοις τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς παιδεύσουσιν.

4.  The goddess is now ordering the six brothers to send gold to their friends on the island.

ἡ θεὸς νῦν κελεύει τοὺς ἓξ ἀδελφοὺς χρυσὸν πέμψαι τοῖς ἐν τῇ νήσῳ φίλοις.

5.  The gifts of their brothers freed the six men.

τὰ δῶρα τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἔλυσεν τοὺς ἓξ ἀνθρώπους.
